Every Visitor eventually hears about the infamous "Road to Hana". We went again recently and survived, via return around the South end of the volcano on Hwy 31. The drive is an exceptional experience. This is an "all day" trip; not too many miles, but slow going. You can rarely drive more than 15 mph once you reach the old road.
Note:If you decide to drive around the whole way, be sure your rental car company will permit you to drive the "back way" via route 31; parts of it are unpaved and rough.

There are over 70 bridges between Kahului and Hana; more than half allowing only one car at a time (you have to look and yield for oncoming traffic). Before reaching Hana, there are few opportunities for a rest stop or a meal. You will need to eat lunch somewhere, and many visitors bring their own - prepared box lunches (bentos) are sold in Paia. The best waterfalls are nearer to Hana, after you pass through Keanae. Once in Hana, you can find food (grinds) at the Hana Ranch or, for those not on a budget, at the Hana Maui Hotel (ono! [tastes good!]). Snacks can be bought at the Hasegawa General Store, famous in song and story.

The famous Seven Pools of Ohe'o Gulch (they are not "Sacred") are a few miles further, and part of Haleakala National Park. This will cost you $10, but you can use the same ticket to go to the top of the mountain ( good for 7 days). Another 2 miles bring you to Kipahulu and Charles Linbergh's lonely grave at the historic little seaside Palapala Ho'omau Congregational Church founded in 1864. Look carefully for the driveway on your left; it is easy to miss. The grounds are lush with flowers.

The "back road starts here. It is not in wonderful shape for maybe 16 miles, full of broken pavement and gravel sections; but it is another beautiful drive. Eventually, you will hit the good road again a few miles before Ulupalakua. This is the home of the only winery on Maui (Tedeschi) and the Ulapalakua General Store and Cafe, which boasts great ribs. If you have time, stop, it is worth a visit. Good wine and exhibits from the Paniolo (Cowboy) days. This road takes you back to Kahalui via Kula. You'll see Kihei below you, but you can't get there from here ( great view!)
