Helpful Hints for the First Timer in Maui:

Packing: Pack light. You won't need a lot of outfits, and your condo has a washer and dryer as well as an iron. Suits and formal wear are never seen on the Island, and as for ties, what are those?. Bring shorts and T-shirts. Most people on the Island, Visitor and Kama'aina (Island residents) alike dress very casually, mostly in loose cotton flower print shirts or golf shirts, shorts or light slacks. Ladies also like to be seen in loose cotton dresses  Sandals or clogs are part of the uniform of the day, although low cut "tennies" are also popular. For those who insist on dressing up when going out, a light knit "St. Johns" type may do for the ladies and for the men, light Italian slacks with loafers. Don't bring more than 1 such outfit. You won't use it. Even dressing up is relaxed here. Just tuck your shirt into your shorts. Trust me, you can walk into any restaurant in shorts, as long as you have a shirt on.

If you are planning a trip up to Haleakala crater, bring a light jacket and wear long pants. It is easily 25-35 degrees cooler (and generally a little windy) at the 10,000 foot level. In the winter it may even snow. A light jacket can also be advisable on an early morning boat trip.

Car Rental: You'll need a car to get around, but we recommend a compact model. Don't get talked into "upgrading" unless you have a big group. The roads are often narrow and parking spaces tend to be tight. Be aware that your "Gold" or other upgraded credit card will probably cover you for the deductible on your car insurance. Your regular insurance normally covers you just as at home. Check before you leave, and decide what you want to do about the rental company's high priced "optional" insurance. Finally be aware of the "pre-purchase the full tank of gas" option. Unless you plan on returning the car running on fumes; it's generally cheaper to buy your own gas.

On Arrival: You will need to buy a few groceries for your stay. If you arrive during the day and are a member, there is a Costco on your left just on the far side of the "Haleakala Highway", the first traffic light you run into leaving the airport. Many family groups stop there on the way to their condo to stock up. Costco also has film, batteries, booze and mix, Aloha shirts and dresses, and even snorkel gear. There is also a Super K mart right next door, as well as a Wal-Mart several blocks down behind the Fire Station for more modest size purchases.

Misc. Stuff: Don't forget your cameras and film. Do bring a pair of binoculars if you have them. They are great for whale watching, in Haleakala Crater, and even on Bikini Patrol (It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it).

Bring Island clothes if you have them, but if you don't, no worries! Just bring money! The selection is great here.

If you have snorkel gear and fins, don't forget them, but don't despair, the diving boats will provide these if you go. Costco and Wal-Mart also sell them.
Note: The snorkeling in front of our Ma'alaea Condo is often very good (if the surf is not up)!

Your Condo: Your condo is really fully equipped, so you can leave your hair dryer and iron at home. Do bring a curling iron, as this is a personal item that you don't want to share. Towels, dishes, flatware, coffee pot, blender, microwave, everything you will need for cooking and comfort are in your unit. You will also have a stereo with CD player and a BluRay Player in the living room and a DVD in each bedroom, so you can pack some of the kid's favorites to keep them busy while you are cooking. Rentals are readily available.

While you will have an initial roll of toilet paper and some small hotel type soaps, all consumables such as soaps, shampoo, tissue, cleaning supplies and food  are your own responsibility. Often previous guests leave non-perishables such as dish soap, canned goods and sealed drinks behind for the next guest. We always have some leftovers that we leave behind at the end of our own  trips. But this is definitely  Pot Luck. If you need coffee to wake up, bring it!.

For your normal grocery needs, there is a Safeway store, Long's Drugstore and the Star Market in Kihei less than 10 minutes south of the  Condo. Ma'alaea does not have a supermarket, although the Tradewinds Market on the ground floor of the Ma'alaea Mermaid has most necessities. There is also a Circle K by the Carl's Jr. restaurant on the highway. It's only 10-12 minutes to Kahului for the more serious shopping.

Phone: You will have a phone for local calls and USA (sorry Canadians, we don't make the phone company rules), but will need a pre-purchased phone card, a credit card, or make collect calls for other long distance. Outgoing direct dial Long Distance except USA, third Party calls and incoming Collect calls to the condo are blocked.

Cell Phone: Not all the Island is covered but ATT, Verizon and Sprint provide coverage in most areas.
